Description
Some guitars are really an absolute rarity, so is this one … it is a unique piece built by the master Leonardo Asencio (Valencia) – Augustin Barrios had exactly a guitar in this style!
The government of Paraguay used a similar guitar as a model for the production of the 50.000 Guarani bill on which Barrios and his guitar are depicted.
It is one of the most beautifully decorated Valencia guitars we have ever seen.
Valencia was home to many famous guitar makers at the turn of the century … Andres Marin, Salvador Ibanez, Francisco Pau, Leonardo Asencio, Jose Seratosa … and so many more. The style of their guitars is unique among Spanish guitars … magnificently decorated rosettes, beautiful mother-of-pearl inlays, fine materials!
These instruments are very popular in musician and collector circles these days, as they have a lot to offer in terms of sound in addition to their outstanding looks.
This guitar is a masterpiece that was finely handcrafted by Leonardo Asencio. It can probably be dated to the time around 1900. The fine materials (spruce top and rosewood for back and sides) and the excellent workmanship make it a unique masterpiece.
Sound-wise, this guitar is an elegant example of Valencia’s finest instruments.
The tone is stunning – rich and silky, smooth and full. It combines the best qualities of a spruce top guitar with the wonderful clarity of rosewood.
The separation between notes is clear and it is incredibly balanced, across the entire range. It has developed a beautiful vintage character to its sound over the years.
Tonally, this guitar can absolutely compete with the instruments of the very great masters (Santos Hernandez, Domingo Esteso, Enrique Garcia …).
The nut width is 50 mm and the scale length is 655 mm. The guitar is in lightly restored and well playable condition!
The action is pleasantly low and the neck is straight, so it can be played with great ease.
