Johann Bucher ~1830 – exquisite guitar by Johann Georg Stauffers most famous student – exceptional tone and elegance

Johann Bucher was a highly skilled luthier, born in 1792 in Hammerschwang, Württemberg, Germany. He became one of the leading figures in Vienna’s renowned tradition of instrument making, working alongside the legendary Johann Georg Stauffer before establishing his own workshop in 1816 in Vienna.

Bucher was primarily known for his exquisite guitars, which were crafted with remarkable precision and artistic flair. His instruments reflected the finest qualities of Viennese guitar making, blending innovation with tradition. He is particularly credited as the inventor of the “Moschin” guitars, a unique design that showcased his forward-thinking approach to luthiery.

Bucher’s work remains highly sought after by collectors and musicians alike, representing a significant chapter in the history of 19th-century European instrument making.

This particular guitar embodies Buchers dedication to craftsmanship. It is modest in ornamentation, yet meticulously constructed with a keen attention to detail. The flamed maple back and sides are of the highest quality, complemented by a fine-grained spruce top, ensuring both structural integrity and outstanding resonance. The headstock design, clearly inspired by Stauffer’s iconic style, adds to the instrument’s unique character.

Equipped with modern Wittner fine-tuning pegs, tuning is effortless while maintaining the authentic aesthetic of the period. The guitar has been professionally restored (a few cracks and a side damage have been repaired), ensuring both playability and structural preservation. With a comfortable low action, it offers a smooth and effortless playing experience.

The tone of this guitar is sweet, warm, and full of character, with a charmingly lively and responsive nature. It has a deep, expressive voice that immediately captivates the player, creating a direct and intimate connection. The aged wood and masterful construction produce a rich spectrum of overtones, with delicate nuances and impressive projection—a perfect balance of clarity and warmth. Despite its refined elegance, the guitar possesses surprising power and volume, making it not only a historical treasure but also a highly playable and inspiring instrument.
