Description

Ignacio Martorell Casasnovas 1892 – beautiful and historically important spanish guitar

Francisco Casasnovas was born in 1816 in Palma de Mallorca. He began building guitars and bandurrias in 1845, opening his workshop at Plaza de la Merced 1, Palma de Mallorca.
He trained his sons, Bartolome Casasnovas i Fiol and Miguel Casasnovas de Fiol. And also his grandson Ignacio Martorell Casasnovas.
The construction of their guitars was of excellent workmanship and the wood of very good quality. They distributed guitars to all Spanish cities, especially Santiago de Compostela and also built flamenco guitars, mostly for guitarrists in Andalusia.
They also received many orders from outside of Spain, mainly from Argentina.
They exhibited a guitar in the Barcelona exhibition of 1888 and obtained a prize. They became also famous for a mechanism to alter string tension.
Even today Casasnovas guitars are famous among players and part of many famous guitar collections.
Ignacio Martorell Casasnovas continued to be listed at Calle San Miguel 77 (Palma de Mallorca) until 1927. He was the last active luthier of the Casasnovas dynasty of guitarmakers.

This guitar is a perfect example of a Casanovas guitar. Very nicely built, with excellent materials. It has a fine spruce top and a nice pear wood back and sides.
The scale length is 630 mm and the nut width 51 mm.

The sound of the guitar is an absolute pleasure … there are guitars like this with which you immediately feel an inner connection and which you quickly take to your heart. That is exactly the case with this guitar.
The sound is very touching and this guitar awakens deep emotions. The basses are round and precise, with a very special and enchanting quality. The singing and crystalline trebles offer a fantastic range of timbres.
The sound of the guitar is fine and delicate, yet one is amazed at how loud it can get and the volume it unfolds. Definitely a romantic guitar on a very high level.

The guitar was professionally restored not too long ago. It is in very good and excellent playable condition, with a low action and a straight neck.
