Marcelino López Nieto 1954 Flamenco Guitar – a rare and beautiful instrument with exceptional sound quality!

This flamenco guitar, built in 1954 by the renowned luthier Marcelino López Nieto, is a remarkable example of Spanish craftsmanship. Combining traditional design with exceptional tonal quality, this guitar represents the legacy of one of Spain’s most revered guitar makers.

Born in 1931, Marcelino López Nieto began his career as a cabinetmaker before transitioning to guitar making. His journey into luthiery was inspired by his studies with Daniel Fortea, as his desire for a fine guitar led him to craft his own when he couldn’t afford to buy one. Although largely self-taught, López Nieto gained valuable experience working with prominent figures in the field. He carved headstocks for Hernández y Aguado and learned much of the theory of guitar construction informally from the widow of Santos Hernández and her nephew, Feliciano Bayón.

In 1949, López Nieto established his own workshop in Madrid, where he gained a reputation for creating classical, flamenco, and historic guitars as well as ancient stringed instruments. His contributions to the art of guitar making earned him a place on Summerfield’s prestigious list of the finest guitar makers since 1800—one of only five living Spanish luthiers to achieve this distinction.

This 1954 flamenco guitar exemplifies the expressive tonal quality for which López Nieto is renowned. It produces a vibrant, percussive sound with clear, singing trebles and a powerful bass response. The guitar’s voice is both warm and articulate, delivering the dynamic range and sharp attack that are hallmarks of the traditional flamenco style. Whether used for rhythmic strumming or delicate melodic passages, this guitar responds with remarkable precision and depth, making it an exceptional choice for flamenco musicians.

The guitar is in good condition for its age, having undergone professional restoration to address some cracks. All repairs were done with care to preserve the instrument’s authenticity and structural integrity. The guitar retains its original character while being fully functional and ready for both performance and recording.

This 1954 Marcelino López Nieto flamenco guitar is a rare and desirable instrument, offering a blend of historical significance, masterful craftsmanship, and outstanding tonal quality. Whether you are a collector or a professional musician, this guitar is a valuable addition to any repertoire or collection—a true testament to the artistry of one of Spain’s greatest luthiers.
