Description

Joseph Christoph Fischer ~1920 – This exceptional contra guitar was built around 1920 by Joseph Christoph Fischer, a renowned zither player, plucked instrument maker, music educator, and composer from Bad Tölz (close to Munich). Fischer was an influential figure in the German and Austrian music scene, shaping the sound of traditional folk and Schrammel music with his instruments.

The contra guitar, also known as the Schrammel guitar, was developed in Vienna in the mid-19th century and quickly gained popularity. Master luthiers such as Johann Georg Stauffer, Johann Gottfried Scherzer, and Franz Angerer built these instruments, which are excellent for accompaniment and are still used today in various musical styles, from folk music to jazz.

This contra guitar was built in the style of the famous Viennese guitars and features a coat-of-arms-shaped body (Wappengitarre)—a design particularly popularized by Stauffer and his students. It has the characteristic Stauffer headstock with unique tuning mechanisms, as well as an adjustable neck, an innovation that allows precise string action adjustment.

The sound of this guitar is of outstanding quality—clear, powerful, and with remarkable tonal flexibility. It has excellent response and impressive volume, while maintaining a wide range of beautiful tonal colors across all registers. Its masterful timbre makes it an ideal instrument for both accompaniment and solo performances.

  • Top: Spruce
  • Back & Sides: Maple
