Description

Javier Cayuela 1978 – fine handmade flamenco guitar – light in weight with fast response!

Javier Cayuela was born in 1927 in Andújar (Jaén), southern Spain to a guitarist, Juan Luis Cayuela Callejas. Wanting to play like his father, but having no money to buy an instrument for himself, he built his first guitar in 1949. As he continued to develop his craft, he took advice from several of the best luthiers in Spain including Miguel Rodríguez, Manuel Reyes and José Ramírez. In February 2012, the Andújar City Council, in recognition of a lifetime dedicated to guitar crafts, honored Javier Cayuela with a street name in the municipality. The workshop continues to this day as the craft had been handed down first to his son Juan Luis Cayuela Bachiller (also a performer) and grandson, Moisés Cayuela Rubio.

This guitar was built by Cayuela in 1978. It has a spruce top. While the sides are cypress the back looks to us as built from mahogany. The scale length is 658 mm and the nut width 52 mm.

It has a warm and rich Andalusian sound with plenty of volume for any concert setting and is very comfortable to play.
This guitar has all the characteristics you would expect from a great vintage flamenco … punchy, lively, lightly built, responsive and with a dry (woody) sound.

It plays very well with a low action and a straight neck. Some cracks have been repaired and it has a small patch at the sides.
This is why we sell this amazing sounding guitar for a bargain price.
