Description
Johann Georg Stauffer was born on January 26, 1778 in Vienna where he also died on January 24, 1853.
First he learned the art of violin making from Franz Geissenhof. In his early years he built entirely after the example of the Italian guitar makers Gaetano Vinaccia and Giovanni Battista Frabricatore.
This very beautiful guitar by Johann Georg Stauffer represents one of the models built by Stauffer with the reference “after the model of Luigi Legnani”. On the label the year of manufacture is noted as 1828 (unfortunately heavily faded) and the serial number 480.
The top is made of spruce. The soundhole is relatively small and decorated with light and dark veneers. The sides and the one-piece back are made of maple and have a brown-gold varnish, which was a characteristic feature of Stauffer guitars at that time.
The guitar is in need of restoration. Especially the top requires extensive repair work.
The guitar is therefore sold as an object of restoration.
